4 Questions to Ask When Hiring a Company to Replace Your Home's Roof

Blog

Now that you have decided to have your home's roof replaced, it is time to hiring a roofing company to get the job done. Here are a few questions to ask when hiring a roofing company to work with:

What Kinds of Materials Are Available?

You do not have to replace your old roofing with the same material. Chances are that your old roof was installed before so many energy-efficient options made it to the market. Today, you can find many different options that will help protect the interior of your home from exterior temperatures. Some energy-efficient options to investigate include asphalt, tile, and shingles. Ask your roofing contractor for a list of roofing materials they offer so you can research each and determine which would best protect your home.

How Long Should the Project Take?

You should make sure that you have a clear idea of how long it will take for your home's roof to get replaced. While the project could take just one day to complete, it may take several more days depending on the scope of the project and the condition of your roof framing. The noise and mess that result from roof construction can be a bit inconvenient, so your family should be prepared ahead of time so they can make plans accordingly.

What Will Be Done With the Old Materials?

It is also a good idea to find out what will happen with the old roofing materials after your new roof is installed. Will the roofing company take it away with them, or will you be responsible for the cleanup? If you will be responsible, you should consider renting a dumpster for a day so that you can quickly and easily load all the old materials up at once and have them hauled away. If the company will be taking it away, when will it happen? Will they take it immediately or will it sit in your yard for days?

Who Will Be Working on the Project?

It is important to find out exactly who will be working on your roofing project, as those people will have access to your property and home while they are there. If the roofing company you are working with hires workers from temp agencies, which agencies are they working with and how are those agencies vetting their workers?

If they hire their employees directly, do they do background checks and take other vetting steps? Are the crew members who will be working on your roof licensed and insured? The answers to these questions should provide you with peace of mind in knowing that your home is secure, and your family is safe while your roof is being replaced.
