Does Shingle Manufacturer Matter When Installing A Roof?

There are several manufacturers of roofing shingles, so you may be spoiled for choice when the time comes to replace your roof. While some people swear by one brand or another, the reality is that there are a few major differences between the major manufacturers. Here are some of the ways in which roofing shingles differ by manufacturer.

The Shingles' Consistency

Some manufacturers produce inconsistent shingles that are difficult to install and lead to a lot of waste. Ideally, all boxes of the same shingles from the same manufacturer should be similar; they should be similar in regard to the straightness of their edges, their thickness, and the evenness of their butt joints. When you get shingles with inconsistent dimensions, you are likely to lose some of them due to breakage and you can also expect the roofing work to take a little bit longer time than usual.

The Available Warranties

Roofing manufacturer warranties will help you avoid huge financial expenditures if your roof fails prematurely due to a manufacturing defect. All shingle manufacturers offer some sort of warranty on their products, but the specifics of the warranties differ by manufacturer. For example, you may find a manufacturer offering a warranty that can be transferred once every five years while another one has a non-transferable warranty. Or you may find a manufacturer with a lifetime algae warranty while another one offers a ten-year algae warranty.

Shingle Popularity

For various reasons, you will find that some shingles are more popular than others in your area. Now, you may not care whether your roof shingles are popular with the neighbors or not, but there is one group of people who do – potential buyers of your home. Therefore, unless you are planning to stay in your house forever without the possibility of selling it, you should give some consideration to the resale value of your home when installing the roof.

Shingle Availability

Lastly, the availability of shingles also differs by manufacturers. Certainly, the major shingle manufacturers (about three of them or so) have their products all over the country. But there are some boutique manufacturers whose products may not be as widely available as the major ones. The availability of shingles may determine how fast your roof is repaired in case a section of it is damaged by, say, a storm.

Ideally, you should talk to your roofing contractor about your preferences before making a decision. That way you will buy the shingle brand that best meets your needs. Visit websites like for more information.

Understanding Roof Damage and The Need For Repairs

I didn't want my roof to start leaking, so I immediately had the damaged shingles replaced. Hi, my name is Troy Blakely and in this blog, you'll find out about the various types of shingle damage. You'll also learn how to determine if you need to have your roof repaired or replaced. I didn't know this information until the roofing contractor explained it to me. Then I decided that I would help other people by spreading the word. A damaged or leaky roof can cause expensive damage to the inside of your home and that's why it's so important to address roof issues as quickly as possible.
