How To Repair Fascia Boards

Blog

A roof that is not properly maintained can start to look old very quickly. This is particularly true when it comes to your roofline, specifically the fascia board. The fascia board is made out of wood, and it is harshly exposed to the sun. Obviously, some fascia boards on your home are going to wear down more dramatically than others because of how much sunlight or moisture they receive. This article explains why it is so important to maintain your fascia board, and how to best do it.

Importance of the Fascia Board

The fascia board is a very important stylistic element along your roofline. This visual line is easy to see from far away. When the line is straight and clean, it makes your entire home look better. The roofline frames your roof and separated from your walls. Because of this, the fascia board is usually painted a different color from the rest of your home. This color contrast makes it stand out. But, it also makes blemishes and defects on your fascia board more noticeable. If a fascia board starts to get weak, the wood can sag, which can also lead to structural issues with the actual roof material.

Repair the Wood Before You Paint It

So, one of the most important things is making sure that your board remains painted or stained. The finish will not only make your board look nicer and newer, but it will also protect the wood. But, you can't always just paint directly over the wood or patch any holes or cracks in it. With some basic exterior wood putty, you can fill all your cracks and make sure that the surface is flat and smooth before you do any painting.

There is a good chance that this repair work will actually be more difficult and time-consuming than the actual painting of your fascia board. While you are making these repairs, you also want to make sure that there is no serious damage inside the wood, which is usually created by termites. That is, if termites have eaten inside of your dashboard, then it will basically be hollow and structurally unsound. If this is the case, you will probably need to replace the entire board, instead of just repairing the damaged spots.

Wood fascia boards need to be maintained and sealed if you want your roofline to always look clean and stylish. Contact your local residential roofing services for more information.

Understanding Roof Damage and The Need For Repairs

I was concerned that a recent hailstorm might have caused damage to my roof. While inspecting my roof, the roofing contractor noted cracked shingles and granule loss from the impact of the hailstones. I didn't want my roof to start leaking, so I immediately had the damaged shingles replaced. Hi, my name is Troy Blakely and in this blog, you'll find out about the various types of shingle damage. You'll also learn how to determine if you need to have your roof repaired or replaced. I didn't know this information until the roofing contractor explained it to me. Then I decided that I would help other people by spreading the word. A damaged or leaky roof can cause expensive damage to the inside of your home and that's why it's so important to address roof issues as quickly as possible.
